New 2012 California Law for Animals

As of January 2, 2012, it is illegal to sell animals on public property in California.  Senate Bill 917 was an amendment to 597 of the California Penal Code that came into effect at the beginning of this year.  I think it is great there is movement to help protect animals, but we have a long road ahead of us to enact laws that truly protect them.  Sadly it does not protect animals from backyard breeders that sell unhealthy animals, or animals under 8 weeks of age.  I am really disappointed that the first offense is only a $250 fine.  That is about the cost of a speeding ticket.  If you’re interested in giving your support for animal rights you can contact the ASPCA, your local Humane Society, or even write a letter to your Congressman.

Recently, there was a lady asking for help in locating a husband and wife couple that sold her young niece a puppy that ended up being terminally sick.  The couple were no where to be found, and her niece ended up spending $6,000 only to have to put the puppy to sleep.

If you’re looking to adopt an animal, please consider adopting one from an animal shelter, animal rescue group or a reputable breeder.  They will do all they can to ensure you’re adopting a happy, healthy pet.
